Our Vets will first do a general health check on your dog to determine if they are healthy enough to donate blood.

We then will run a blood pannel to check the health of your dog's internal organs. With this blood sample, we will then check the blood type of your pet. There are 8 different types of blood for canines: DEA 1.1, 1.2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. We then cross-match your dog's blood type with the recipient to ensure they are compatible.

After we find out your dogs' blood type, they are placed under sedation to keep them calm and safe. Access is gained through their jugular vein and a collection system is put in place. Your dogs' vital signs will be closely monitored during this time by a team of vets and nurses.

After the blood is collected, a bandage is then placed to assist the vein to heal. They are then woken from their sedation and watched closely by our nursing team during recovery.
